There are 23 or so lighthouses along Penobscot Bay, plus three out in the Gulf of Maine assisting nautical traffic on their approaches and departures from Pen Bay. Some of the lighthouses are quite small, or simply caisson plopped in the water near shoals and rocks. Most of these lighthouses, today, seem to be well kept; although, many had rocky careers in the past.
